What a title, right!
I couldn’t think of a better way to segue into what I’m going to right about, which is hiring a running coach.
First, you guys I am not a superwoman, but I am a Mom and all you mom and non-mom’s out there can attest that life in general can be challenging, throw kids into the mix…and you earn yourself the right to complain occasionally, (well…not really…boy does anyone have a shovel?!)
Ramble…ramble…ramble…okay point! I have come to the realization that I have way-too-much on my plate at this point in my life. I lovingly call what I do, “wearing multiple hats” I have my mom, teacher, housewife, wife, dog walker, poop picker upper, (yes, that’s a thing), made, chef, family “treasurer”, (that sounds so much cooler than bill payer) hats (and probably more just can’t think of them all right now)…agh! I truly feel blessed to be all these things…but my “me” time has greatly diminished.
I had to post this picture just to prove a point of my life being wonderfuly invaded by all things train! again, not complaints guys…just getting my much too long winded point across.
Running has always been a source of healing/passion of mine. I haven’t always loved to go out for a run, but even in high school when I was running only in soccer, I felt free when I was running the ball up the side of the field towards the goal….it felt really good to let my legs fly!
So, before hiring a coach I did what most do when they decide to become a “runner”…google running schedules and then proceed to fly at the seat of my pants. It worked out in the fact that I have done incredibly well, (speed wise) at my races. However, I wanted more! training is lonely (at times), I had and still do have no idea what I’m doing and worried about injuring myself, putting together a training schedule besides everything else I do was not going to happen, and I wanted running to be a life-long love not a 5 year fling….enter Mat Nark.
I was gifted with Mat in my life, because of this amazing lady!
You guys..I know I’ve talked about Erin and her blog over at The Little Runner Girl. If you haven’t checked it out already, please do!
Erin had posted a blog about why you should hire a running coach. I of course took her literally, did my research and after a lot of time spent on the internet and a few phone calls…I had the opportunity to work with Mat!
It really has been too short of time for me to give you feed back on life with a running coach….but, if the brief moments of what I’ve had so far with him are any indication of the future…I’m beyond excited!
Thanks to my coach, I have the time to run without the worry of overthinking something I originally started to cope with the stress of the daily grind. I finally feel like I’m running with a sense of purpose! I am not running for the sake of putting on miles…I have a clearly defined goal and a person who is experienced and knowledgeable to help me step closer towards those goals.
Ultimately, it will be up to me. It will depend on wether I chose to listen, (which I am finding out I need to quite my busy mom brain and really pay attention…probably the toughest thing so far about having someone hold you accountable). My success will also depend on if I don’t let my own doubts get in the way of enjoying the journey; after all…a huge part of hiring a coach was so I could give up the “wheel”, stick my head out the window, and enjoy the breeze, (I have dogs…it seemed like a great analogy)
Oh, by the way, since getting “better” at this whole running thing..these two have not been thrilled with their two-legged mom. They enjoy a run at a leisurely pace, (unless their is a squirrel involved) and I have found myself dragging them around town more then running with them…silly dog!
I am really excited to share my journey with a running coach and I hope it will inspire you to do the same if you’re like me and want “more” out of running. Thank you Mat for having faith in me and taking me on as a runner.
Cheers to a hopeful happy running journey ahead!
